There are many different types of shipping containers. SBS Freight Indonesia has a great range of containers which we serves. Here we list our 5 types of shipping containers and what they are used for.

1. Shipping container

The most common type of container is the shipping container, also called dry van container or dry box. This type of container is used for transport by road and overseas and forms ideal storage space as well. The 20FT and 40FT shipping containers are the most common dimensions. A High Cube container is slightly higher than a standard shipping container. Dry box, dry van container and cargo container are synonyms for shipping container.

2. Reefer container

Reefer container is short for refrigerated container: a shipping container with a generator which cools the cargo. Possible cargo in a reefer container includes vegetables, fruits, dairy, meat, fish, flowers and pharmaceuticals. Read more on what is a reefer container and how does a reefer container work.

3. Tank container

Tank containers are used for transporting liquids or chemicals. The IMO certification of the tank container tells which type of liquids can be transported in the container.

4. Open top container

Open top containers can be loaded from the top. This is especially helpful when dealing with goods or mortar with a crane or fork lift truck. An open top container has no fixed roof, it can be covered by a tarpaulin instead.

5. Flat rack container

Flat rack containers are used for transporting goods with unique dimensions. This is possible because a flat rack container has no sides. Read more on what is a flat rack container.

Shipping Container Type

Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are standardized rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) that define the responsibilities, costs, and risks for buyers and sellers in international trade, clarifying who handles what (delivery, export/import clearance, insurance) during the shipment of goods, preventing misunderstandings, with popular versions including EXW, FOB, and DDP, updated regularly (like Incoterms 2020).

Key Functions

• Clarify Responsibilities: Determine duties for delivery, export/import permits, and customs clearance.

• Allocate Costs: Define who pays for specific parts of the journey (e.g., transport, insurance).

• Transfer Risk: Pinpoint when risk shifts from seller to buyer (e.g., at the factory, on the ship).

• Reduce Misunderstandings: Provide a common language for global trade, essential on commercial invoices.

Common Examples (Incoterms 2020)

• EXW (Ex Works): Buyer takes all risk and cost from the seller's premises.

• FCA (Free Carrier): Seller delivers goods to a carrier nominated by the buyer at a specified place (export clearance done).

• FOB (Free On Board): Seller responsible until goods are loaded onto the vessel (for sea/inland waterway).

• CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight): Seller covers cost, insurance, and freight to destination port (sea/inland waterway).

• DAP (Delivered at Place): Seller delivers to a named place, buyer handles import clearance.

• DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): Seller handles everything, including import duty and taxes, to the final destination.

How They Work

• Mode-Specific: Some (like FOB, CIF) are for sea/waterway, others (like FCA, DAP) for any transport mode.

• Hierarchy: Rules are structured to show increasing seller responsibility, from EXW (least) to DDP (most).

• Application: Incorporated into sales contracts to provide clear guidelines for international transactions.
